FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE


     After six rounds of elimination, Jessa Newby and

Keegan Potthoff of Kearney High emerged with the

runner-up plaque and qualified for the National

Forensic League Tournament  at Las Vegas in June.

Students from all fifty states and several countries

will compete in this five-day contest. Newby and

Potthoff performed "The Suessification of Romeo and

Juliet."


     The Bearcats won seven individual awards at the

Nebraska North district contest held at Millard North

High School.  Marissa Benavides finished third and is

the first alternate to Nationals in international

extemporaneous speaking.  Cassie Larreau  placed

fourth and is the first alternate in dramatic

interpretation.  Larreau and her partner, Chris Lyons,

placed seventh in duo interpretation.  Kelsey Reiman

earned fifth place in domestic extemp.


     Kearney will compete in the NSAA A-4 district

speech contest at North Platte on Monday, March 3.

The top four finalists in each event will advance to

the NSAA State Contest at UNK on Tuesday, March 18.

Kearney High speech team members will also serve as

runners for the Class C-2, D-1, and D2 state contest

on Wednesday, the 19th.
