THE KEARNEY COMMUNITY

Kearney, originally a supply station for historic Fort Kearny, has grown into one of Nebraska's most vibrant cities. Located in south central Nebraska, Kearney is a retail, tourism, small industry, and medical hub of the region. Kearney is the location of the University of Nebraska - Kearney, a university of approximately 6,000 students.

THE KEARNEY PUBLIC SCHOOLS
The Kearney Public School provide an educational program to meet the needs of 4,500 students. Kearney Public Schools have eight elementary schools, two middle schools (grades 6 - 8), and a high school (grades 9 - 12). The Kearney Schools consistently earn the AA Accreditation, the highest possible accreditation in the State of Nebraska.

KEARNEY HIGH SCHOOL
Kearney High School is a four-year high school, serving approximately 1,400 students. The school is accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools. The Kearney High School faculty includes eighty-seven teachers, four counselors, and four administrators. Over 57% of the faculty have completed degrees at the Masters or higher level.

NATIONAL/STATE RECOGNITION
Both Kearney High School and the Horizon Middle School have been recognized as exemplary schools in the United States Department of Education Secondary School Recognition Program. In 1984, the Kearney Public School District was one of only two districts in the state to have two secondary schools recognized as exemplary under the recognition program. Kearney High School continues its tradition of excellence by its representation in state-wide rankings for academics, clubs, forensics, music, student government, theater and athletics.
